The Switchbacks' season ended Saturday night in Albuquerque, where top-seeded New Mexico United beat them 4-0 in the USL Championship Western Conference semifinal. United scored 91 seconds in, and led 3-0 at the half. It was a non-penalty goal the Switchbacks' previous seven opponents couldn't get.

Fifth-seeded Colorado Springs won its first-ever road playoff match last week and wanted a first win in New Mexico over the top seed. Instead, the loss snapped a 10-game unbeaten run, and United returns to the Conference final, where it fell last season.

  • Greg Hurst goals: 29th and 44th minutes
  • Switchbacks keeper Christian Herrera: four saves
  • Red card: Stevie Echevarria, in second-half stoppage time

“Losing in a shootout is the hardest way to lose.”

Highlanders coach Chad Bregg

The turnaround is the real story. Last season the Highlanders scored just 20 goals in 15 matches and recorded the lowest win total in team history.

  • 2025: finished 2-9-4
  • Allowed more than two goals in a match once
  • Wins included Coronado, a 4A school
  • Ties included Sand Creek and Falcon, both 4A schools

The Highlanders scored 48 goals this season, up from 20 in 2025
