  • El Paso County faces a childcare crisis as a new report finds 14,391 spaces are needed to meet demand, with local estimates reaching as high as 17,000. The report shows high childcare costs and low wages strain families and providers—adding further economic challenges to the county.  Colorado Springs Business Journal
  • Halo Reentry Inc.—a new youth recovery center in Colorado Springs—is now open to provide mentorship and support that helps youths avoid criminal paths. Founder Jeremy Pavlik said the center offers individualized treatment plans, life skills and job training to guide young people toward a better future.  KOAA News5

  • The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is asking for help to find a missing teenager. Elena, a 13-year-old last seen at 2:30 p.m. Sunday near Main Street and US Highway 85/87 in Security-Widefield, is described (5 ft 2 in, 120 lbs with dark brown hair in a buzz cut and dark brown eyes).  KOAA News5
  • Colorado Springs Police Department welcomed K9 Roam as its first certified firearms detection dog after completing training from the National Police Canine Association—he will assist patrol officers and detectives with firearm-related calls and investigations.  11 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is expanding its giraffe habitat by building a new 12,000‑square‑foot barn—set for completion in summer with a 25% larger feeding area and 11 feeding stations for closer animal encounters. Visitors can still explore the current giraffe barn and attend the Tails, Tunes and Tastes event that supports conservation efforts.  11 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Springs Municipal Airport is updating its terminal with the ElevateCOS project to improve restrooms, lighting, flooring and add Common Use gate operations that let any airline board from any gate. Officials say construction will continue until fall as the $36 million project, funded by FAA grants, works to make travel smoother — connecting our community to global destinations.  Colorado Springs Business Journal
  • Colorado's new child abuse law takes effect Sept. 1 and requires educators and child care workers to report suspected abuse within 24 hours—no one else can report for them. The law also bans using race, poverty, or ethnicity as reasons for making a report and provides free online training from the Colorado Department of Human Services.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade said the city faces an $11.5 million budget shortfall that may force cuts in services like road repair, park upkeep, and public safety because sales tax growth has been less than expected this year. He stressed smart, strategic growth—through increased housing and updated zoning—to widen the tax base and help avoid higher costs for residents.  Colorado Springs Business Journal
