  • On November 6, a no-cost grocery event was hosted by Care and Share and Food to Power at Grace Church of the Nazarene in Stratton Meadows to help residents cope with delayed SNAP benefits amid the longest federal shutdown—volunteers noted many first-timers and regulars needed food assistance.   • Walter Knight, 101, a World War II medic from Colorado Springs who cared for soldiers in the Pacific, will ride in his convertible PT Cruiser in the upcoming Veterans Day parade—honoring promises made to fallen comrades. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters battled a 5,500-acre fire at Fort Carson that started during a training exercise and reached 25% containment by Friday morning thanks to warm temperatures (and wind that aided its spread); no injuries or damage were reported.  Denver7

  • Colorado Springs pianist and teacher Jo Ellen Hubert, known for her Texas career teaching piano and producing musicals, now gives private lessons and teaches at Christian Youth Theater. EDUCATION NEWS

  • UCCS will host its own Air Force ROTC detachment in August 2026 to let students train closer to home. The new program, housed in the College of Education, will accept 75 to 100 cadets in its first year—ending the long drive to Boulder that many faced.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A study by WalletHub ranked Colorado Springs as the fifth-best city for veterans in the U.S., noting strong job prospects, veteran income growth, quality VA facilities, and low veteran homelessness among the 100,000 veterans living in the city. Mayor Yemi Mobolade said today the ranking shows the city's strong military ties and ongoing commitment to those who served.  11 News
  • On Friday, the state of Colorado submitted a request for full SNAP payments for November — the vendor will work with the USDA to load EBT cards for over 600,000 Coloradans if approved.  KOAA News5
