COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crews from Black Forest Fire Rescue and Monument Fire District rescued an uninjured dog stuck in an 18-inch drainage pipe on Oct. 24 — they dug to free it and reunited it with its owner. The Classical Academy defended its state marching band title over the weekend — this marked their sixth state win in seven seasons after hundreds of hours of practice.  Colorado Springs Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Higher Learning Commission is reviewing a complaint that faculty cuts may hurt the Air Force Academy's academic programs, and the academy must respond in writing within 30 days with supporting evidence. Retired Air Force Col. Murphy said the loss of experienced instructors in technical fields may lead to further reviews such as a site visit if the response does not meet accreditation standards.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade urged community members to support local food banks amid a SNAP funding freeze that left about 85,500 residents without grocery support. He provided local resources including Pikes Peak United Way 2-1-1 and Food to Power—calling for urgent donations as federal funding issues continued.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • A free lecture on schizophrenia treatment will be held on Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon at Peak Vista Community Health Centers in Colorado Springs — national expert Dr. Rob Laitman will share his protocol on clozapine use while his wife presents and their son performs after a documentary screening.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Cheyenne Mountain’s star runner Aiden Le Roux did not compete in the state cross country race Saturday due to an injury & Palmer Ridge freshman Addison Michalak earned her first podium finish by placing third in the 4A girls race at Norris Penrose Event Center.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Yesterday, the Classical Academy cross country teams swept the state championships at Norris Penrose Event Center, with the Titan girls earning their third consecutive title and the boys clinching their 10th win by a three-point margin. Coach Matt Norton said the team’s strong family spirit drove the victories and the girls will move to 4A next season—an upgrade that brings a fresh challenge.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • A skirmish between Air Force and Army staff was shown in the tunnel at Falcon Stadium during a game that Army won 20-17 Saturday—highlighting the fierce rivalry between the academies. Army coach Jeff Monken and Air Force coach Troy Calhoun both commented on how the excitement runs year-round.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Army begins its run for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy at 10 a.m. today at Falcon Stadium as it takes on Air Force. Air Force is out of the trophy race after a loss to Navy in early October and viewers can watch the game on CBS (channel 11) in Colorado Springs.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Cheyenne Mountain junior Raegan McRae won the 4A state cross country title on Saturday at Norris Penrose Event Center in 18 minutes, 5.90 seconds—she pushed hard in the final stretch and her Red-Tailed Hawks team finished fifth with 141 points.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • At Saturday’s 4A Colorado State Cross Country Championships, Oliver Horton broke the Norris Penrose course record by finishing in 14 minutes, 48 seconds and led Coronado to win its first team title in cross country since 2012—this championship marks the school’s first state title in any sport since 2014.  Colorado Springs Gazette
