  • Former Colorado Springs City Council president Merv Bennett died over the weekend at age 77. He served 40 years with the YMCA (and later on City Council) and local officials said he worked hard for the community.  11 News
  • Today local nonprofits offer volunteer opportunities as a detailed list provides contact numbers for groups such as the American Cancer Society, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Community Partnership for Child Development. BUSINESS NEWS

  • B Wild Investments LLC acquired all Colorado Springs Qdoba restaurants earlier this month, including six city locations, and the group said it will remodel some units and open new ones over the next few years—while keeping current hours and team members unchanged.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Oct. 25, teams raced in the 31st Emma Crawford Coffin Races in Manitou Springs to honor Emma Crawford, who died in 1891 (rains in the 1920s washed her coffin down from Red Mountain). Competitors from groups including the Garden of the Gods Trading Post team and the Michigan State University Alumni Club joined the event that highlights a unique local tradition.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • The May Museum will host BOOO with the Bugs this Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 710 Rock Creek Canon Road—this kid-friendly Halloween event offers candy, costumes, face painting and insect exhibits.  11 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An unnamed company has submitted plans to build a 566,200 square foot beverage manufacturing facility at Peak Innovation Park near the airport—if built, the project will create nearly 400 good-paying jobs and boost local economic activity. The new facility will be larger than the existing Frito-Lay building and is part of ongoing development efforts in the park.  Colorado Springs Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and community members from UCCS, Colorado College, CSU, and CSU Pueblo gathered on October 11th at North Cheyenne Cañon Park for the first intercollegiate mycology event organized by the University of Colorado Mycological Society—researchers identified wild mushrooms including rare species. The event, held after weeks of dry weather delays, led to plans for a mycology lab, a course on plastic-degrading mushrooms, and community mushroom beds to boost research and education in fungi.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Students at Community Prep in Colorado Springs recorded an album with local hip hop artist KO Kelly through the School of Rap program that aims to earn a Grammy nomination.   • Colorado health insurance premiums for low- and middle-income buyers will double in 2026, and about 75,000 people may lose coverage when tax credits expire Dec. 31.   • Air Force quarterback Liam Szarka set a record with five straight 100-yard rushing games — a milestone that tops past achievements — and the team will face Army at 10 a.m. Saturday on CBS.   • Boys soccer state playoffs will begin Wednesday at Weidner Field as area schools host first round games in single elimination brackets for 5A-3A and 2A teams—teams are set to advance toward the state title game on Nov. 15.   • Coach Joe Sisneros was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame last week and spent over 26 years coaching at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind — using sign language to teach plays and train his players — and his work helped lead to the 1977 season when the Bulldogs won their first state championship.  Colorado Springs Gazette
