COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Venetucci Farm in Colorado Springs is hosting its 5th annual Pumpkin Fest every weekend in October where visitors can buy pumpkins, flowers, food, and drinks, and enjoy hayrides and a spooky maze—families pay $5 admission for those over age 3.  11 News
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife Park Ranger Jasmine Wolcott said Cheyenne Mountain State Park will host free Halloween events this Saturday featuring an archery pumpkin shoot, trunk or treat, and a stargazing party (4–6 p.m., 5–7 p.m., and 8–10 p.m.). Mueller State Park will host a Murder Mystery Hike (4:30–7 p.m.) based on a 1971 disappearance, and both events cost $10 per car or are free with a Parks Pass.  11 News
  • Officials will host a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Oct. 30 at Duck Lake in Monument Valley Park to celebrate its restoration from a grimy pit into a scenic water feature—marking the end of a $2.4 million project funded by local revenues and private contributions. The event honors the city founder’s vision and renews one of the area’s most historic park spaces.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • This weekend, the Family Success Center will host the Japanese Cultural Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with free admission and local vendors, while the Pioneers Museum holds a Halloween history hunt from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Additional events include a YMCA Creepy Crawl 5K, youth symphony performances on Sunday at the Wasson Academic Campus Auditorium, an elephant exhibit opening Friday at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, a garage sale at Rocky Mountain Vibes Stadium, and reptile and zoo activities — all set to offer local residents a busy weekend.  Colorado Springs Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Poor Richard’s Restaurant at 324 1/2 N. Tejon St. is offering free meals and drinks—starting today at 11 a.m.—to federal employees who are furloughed, dismissed or working without pay during the government shutdown. The restaurant seeks contributions to help cover costs and urges other businesses to support affected families.  Pikes Peak Bulletin
  • QuikTrip, a Tulsa-based gas station and convenience store chain, opened its first Colorado Springs location on Thursday at 1590 N Academy Boulevard and brought 24 local jobs. The company plans to open at least three more sites in the city while it already runs over 20 stores in Colorado.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • IKEA will open a smaller 'Plan and Order Point with Pick-up' store at University Village Shopping Center in Colorado Springs in early November, where customers can book appointments with planning specialists and order home furnishings for pick-up or delivery. The store will not carry inventory but will offer design advice for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms — a new retail approach from the company.  11 News

CRIME NEWS

  • The Police Foundation of Colorado Springs has raised over $68,000 in donations to support K9 Roam, a dog stabbed on Oct. 15 who lost a leg during a barricade incident, with funds coming from 32 states plus donors from Canada, the United Kingdom and Belgium and proceeds from K9 merchandise sales aiding his ongoing care and the local K9 unit.  Colorado Springs Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A free human trafficking awareness session is scheduled for November 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Monument Community Presbyterian Church, 238 Third St. Kristin Hersh—board member of the Human Trafficking Task Force—will explain key signs and steps locals can take to report trafficking.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Poor Richard’s Restaurant and Rico’s Café and Wine Bar in downtown Colorado Springs will offer free meals and drinks to federal workers impacted by the government shutdown if they show their government ID once a week, beginning today at 11 a.m.—extra donations will go to Marian House Soup Kitchen to help cover meal costs.  11 News
  • On Oct. 10, US Fish and Wildlife Services sent a letter — telling Gov. Jared Polis and CPW director Jeff Davis to stop plans to import gray wolves from Canada or Alaska because the 10(j) rule only allows wolves from the northern Rocky Mountains area. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said it will review the letter — while it continues to explore wolf reintroduction options using animals from approved states.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Senators Hickenlooper and Bennet sent a letter to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins as a government shutdown may cut SNAP benefits in November, which would hurt over 600,000 Coloradans and strain local food pantries in Colorado Springs—one local family fears they could soon face tough choices between food and bills. Food providers are urging donations to help meet the rising demand while federal leaders work to secure funding before hardship increases.  11 News

  • High school runners met at Monument Valley Park on Thursday to earn spots at the state championship next week. Cheyenne Mountain girls won the 4A title led by Raegan McRae, while Coronado boys and Air Academy girls, who later won the 5A title at Centennial, set a strong path for state competition—demonstrating great teamwork and skill.  Colorado Springs Gazette
