COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local nonprofit groups have scheduled a series of fundraising events starting Oct. 12 in Colorado Springs—such as a Spirits of Sunnyside Walking Tour at Sunnyside Cemetery to benefit the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum, Sleepers in September supporting Newborns in Need, and a Women Who Care gathering at The Warehouse Restaurant on Wednesday. The calendar also lists events like a Cheyenne Village Golf Tournament, Ghost Stories of Old Manitou Walking Tours, Viking Fair, COS Witches Ride, Vintner Dinner, and more fundraisers through December that support local causes.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • A series of military events begin today in Colorado Springs and include free in-person and virtual Comeback Yoga classes, DAV Chapter 26 meetings with hot meals, VFW bingo sessions and veteran support groups — events are scheduled on different days at local venues and veterans are encouraged to join while organizers request event submissions be sent two weeks in advance.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • The Colorado Springs Police Department is partnering with Chase Bank to host a free fraud and scam prevention event Tuesday from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Chase branch at 1802 Southgate Road, where law enforcement and banking experts will teach how to spot scams and answer questions (via Zoom virtual option available).  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • David C Cook, a 150-year-old ministry based in Colorado Springs, rebranded as Cook Media Global to bring its publishing, music, and educational operations under one umbrella—preparing for future acquisitions and global outreach. CULTURE NEWS

  • Bob DeWitt opened his Secret Bookshop in Fountain on Tuesday, Oct. 7 to show his large collection of rare books and old documents about Colorado history—helping local readers learn about ghost towns, mining, and early settlements. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Gazette editorial board endorsed eight school board candidates — Cole, Johnson, Ruehl, Payne, Waldrep, Tripp, Thompson and D’Avola — for Districts 11, 20 and 49 as voters begin receiving mail-in ballots this weekend. The endorsements highlight candidates with strong backgrounds in education, military service and law enforcement to improve academics and keep politics out of the classroom.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Colorado Springs homeowners in Wildland Urban Interface areas can reduce wildfire risk by managing vegetation in three zones and taking steps such as raking leaves and trimming grasses—measures that lower the chance of fire damage to homes.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Springs’ Historic Preservation Board adopted a new study last Monday called the Colorado Springs Historic Resources Survey and Context Plan—showing that most preservation has taken place in six key areas, known as the historic corridor. HEALTH NEWS

  • Recovery Rebels Softball, a league for mental health and addiction recovery, helped veteran Anna Martinez and other members release stress by playing weekly at Skyview Sports Complex in Colorado Springs—where a supportive community fosters positive change. Founded by Rob Decker in 2021, the league has grown to include five teams with about 50 to 60 members and will resume play around April.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Colorado College hockey beat Air Force 4-2 on Saturday at Cadet Ice Arena—rallying with three goals in the third period to keep the Pikes Peak Trophy since 2018-19.
