  • Colorado Springs rat rescue Coloratto, led by Florence Hicks-Moore, cares for lab rat Torro—a snowy white albino with red eyes and a pink tattoo on his leg. Self-proclaimed rat lover Nicole Ochart wants to adopt him once he proves he is safe with children, though the rescue is holding off to let others have a chance.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Retired Army Sergeant Travis Blackman, a paralyzed veteran from Colorado Springs, received a free accessible home from the Helping a Hero nonprofit—this house has an open floor plan with reachable appliances and a bathroom that lets him move with ease.  KOAA News5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Colorado Springs artist Kai Gaynor is preparing her immersive exhibit Transcendent Femme at Meanwhile Block near Weidner Field—visitors will explore rooms like Childhood Blues and the Hall of Reflection that prompt self-examination through art. The exhibit opens with a free reception Friday and features 20 free workshops and events throughout October focused on mind, body and spirit.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Colorado Springs’ Pioneer Park, a five-acre site on the mesa near Mesa Road and Fillmore Street, was once Mesa Cemetery where early settlers were buried from the 1850s to the early 1900s. Some remains were moved but at least 46 still lie underground—marked by a 1949 marble monument honoring over 40 pioneers.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • In October, Arts Month will feature more than 200 events at over 100 venues in El Paso and Teller counties while the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region will move from its downtown space to a new office at 287 E.   • Judge Timothy J. Schutz from Colorado’s Court of Appeals urged the state Supreme Court on September 25 to adopt one clear definition of reasonable doubt to guide trial judges—he said the current three standards lead to uncertainty in cases like People v.   • Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Moblade on Thursday at the Broadmoor focused on public safety in his State of the City address—he said the city would work to help law enforcement, add emergency staff and clean up downtown while also planning new homes, repairs, and economic boosts. His address outlined steps to improve local services and build a stronger community.  KVOR

  • Switchbacks captain Matt Mahoney balances soccer and fatherhood as he scored two goals in a 3 to 1 win on August 1 and earned an assist on Sept. 13.
