  • Students from Palmer High and Widefield D-3 walked out on September 17 to protest gun violence after a shooting at Evergreen High and a gun confiscation at Mesa Ridge High—demanding safety measures like mental health screenings and changes to phone pouch policies.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo said that Albert, an 11-year-old Rocky Mountain goat—known as The King of the Mountain—passed away quickly and peacefully on Saturday afternoon after enjoying a sunny day high on the zoo's rocky cliffs.  11 News
  • Families gathered at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs as a quiet prelude to Saturday’s Fallen Firefighter Memorial ceremony—more than 300 names were added to the wall to honor firefighters’ service and sacrifice.  KOAA News5

  • A new grocery store—Gordon Restaurant Market—will be located near South Circle Drive and Monterey Road in southeast Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department said. It will open soon to serve local residents.  11 News

  • Playwright Kate Hamill reimagines Sherlock Holmes and Watson as women in her new play 'Ms. Holmes and Ms. Watson, Apt. 2B' at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. Previews took place on Thursday and are scheduled for today— the play will open Saturday and run through Oct. 5 as it shows the duo solving crimes and building a close friendship.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State water officials held a 14-hour hearing in Durango where about 100 experts debated a proposal to change the Shoshone water rights to help keep more water in the river—an effort that may affect over 10,000 upstream users. The board will decide by November whether to let the Colorado River District share control of these rights—balancing environmental needs with concerns from Front Range groups.  Colorado Public Radio
  • On September 12, Colorado Springs announced that Meadows Park Community Center would close by October 10 to save around $750,000 amid a $31 million budget shortfall, and former manager Brian Kates said he was shocked to learn of the decision after his retirement. Community members have started petitioning to keep the center open—arguing it is a key gathering place for local residents.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Colorado activated its Prison Population Management Measures after the vacancy rate in state prisons stayed below 3% for 30 days, marking the first use of the policy (to allow the early release of eligible inmates and ease overcrowding).   • Colorado Springs City Council is seeking applications from local residents to serve as one of three alternate volunteer members on its Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Advisory Board.
