  • The new Colorado Springs Senior Center is set to open with a ribbon-cutting on August 29 at 10 a.m.—the facility, operated by the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region, will begin hosting classes and events the first week of September.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • A Colorado judge on Friday rejected a plea deal for funeral director Jon Hallford, who admitted abusing 191 corpses, after family members argued that the proposed 20-year sentence would be too lenient—resetting the state case for trial.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Five people were arrested and three vehicles were recovered Thursday evening during a Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement—BATTLE—operation led by Colorado Springs police with help from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and Colorado State Patrol in multiple auto theft investigations.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • On Friday at 2:48 p.m. in the 1100 block of Branding Iron Circle, Colorado Springs police fatally shot a suspect who fired at officers during a law enforcement operation—investigators are now reviewing the incident.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Colorado Springs will host the Labor Day Lift Off—its 49th annual hot air balloon festival—featuring 70-80 colorful balloons launching in the early morning and glowing at night; the event will offer live music, drone light shows, hot air rides and family activities from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.  Springs

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County announced that starting Monday, August 25, Palmer Divide Road east of Interstate 25 will be limited to one lane for one week—weather permitting—to replace a corrugated metal pipe. Drivers are asked to use alternate routes via Furrow Road and Highway 105 to avoid delays.  El Paso County
