- ➤ The Colorado Springs Fire Department reported an electric vehicle was fully involved in a fire in the 3100 block of North Nevada Avenue Tuesday afternoon—residents were urged to avoid the area. Colorado Springs Gazette
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Dequan Ward, a 37-year-old man, died in his jail cell Friday after deputies found him unresponsive around 4:30 a.m. and medical staff attempted lifesaving efforts, with investigators reporting no signs of foul play. Colorado Springs Gazette
- ➤ Colorado Springs police are investigating the likely murder-suicide of former chief deputy treasurer Tanya Burnside—whose body and that of Bryce Tallent were discovered on Aug. 10 on Sod House Trail amid a shots-fired call. Colorado Springs Gazette
- ➤ Police are searching for missing at-risk 13-year-old Bentley Christensen, last seen Monday night at her east Colorado Springs home on the 1100 block of Bonfoy Avenue near North Union Boulevard and Uintah Street; authorities believe she may be trying to get to Utah and ask anyone with information to call 719-444-7000. - ➤ The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is searching for Mary Margaret Checketts, a 31 year old Indigenous Chippewa woman last seen near the 70th block of South Sierra Madre Street north of Colorado Avenue in Colorado Springs—she was wearing a black long sleeve shirt and white yoga pants with flowers. 11 News
- ➤ Stephen Chan, 80, turned himself in last year after allegedly killing and kidnapping his wife and was convicted on all three counts in a four-day trial in the 4th Judicial District—he received a life sentence with 32 additional years for assault and 6 years for kidnapping. - ➤ Investigators have warned local residents of a phone scam in which a caller impersonates a CBI Cyber Crimes Special Agent to request personal and financial details using a false callback number—and officials stress the CBI never asks for payment by phone. 11 News

- ➤ A three-person crew from Colorado Springs Fire Department returned after a 14-day deployment helping fight the Elk and Lee fires on the western side of the region—Lieutenant Todd Smith said the crew protected property, cared for animals, and learned new tactics during hot, dry, and windy conditions. Over the past month, the department has also sent 17 firefighters to support other fire efforts. KOAA News5
