COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city government and the Trails and Open Space Coalition are hosting a community clean-up event next Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon to restore the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail from Monument Valley Park by the pickleball courts to America the Beautiful Park (supplies will be provided). Volunteers must bring water, pants, and closed-toed shoes (essential gear) to help maintain our local trail.  KOAA News5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A four-vehicle crash on I-25 in south Colorado Springs early Wednesday caused a full southbound closure and resulted in two hospitalizations—one lane reopened by 7:30 a.m.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • The Colorado Springs Police Department released body camera and drone video from a shooting on July 23 in the 3400 block of Floris Point when an officer chased 27-year-old Don Woodson facing domestic violence charges, who hid behind a bush before the officer fired one shot that did not injure him — Woodson was arrested on domestic violence and robbery charges and the officer is on administrative leave as the investigation continues.  KOAA News5
  • Colorado Springs Police responded to a shooting call in the 4100 block of Sod House Trail on August 10 at about 2:18 p.m.—officers later identified the deceased as 45-year-old Tanya Burnside, whose death is being investigated as a homicide, and 42-year-old Bryce Tallent, whose death is being investigated as a suicide, after an autopsy on August 11.  City of Colorado Springs
  • Federal agents raided two Colorado Springs restaurant-grocery stores—El Ranchito on Airport Road and El Ranchito No.2 on Maizeland Road—yesterday as part of a money laundering investigation, seizing phones, cash and computers while multiple agencies including the DEA, FBI and IRS were seen although no arrests have been confirmed.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Today, Fountain got a $1.93 million EPA grant to clean up the old Lorraine Elementary School site and plan a new community center and 106 homes. Officials must use the funds in three years—while some locals worry about more traffic and bright lights.  KOAA News5
  • Clean and Safe is a new pilot program that began in July to boost downtown security by increasing officers’ hours and assigning outreach workers—city council members have approved a resolution to direct $700 thousand of retail marijuana tax revenue to support the project—ensuring enhanced safety and improved appearance downtown.  KOAA News5
  • Seven Colorado Springs firefighters have been deployed to western Colorado to help battle wildfires that have burned more than 160,000 acres combined; a four-person crew is handling the Turner Gulch fire in Mesa County — which burned 28,792 acres — and a three-person team with a deputy fire marshal are working on the Lee and Elk fires in Rio Blanco County — where structural protection and community updates are provided — as the deployments are expected to last two weeks.  Colorado Springs Gazette
