Whataburger received permits yesterday for a new location on Woodmen Road and Meridian Road; officials said the $1.4M project will mark the chain's first appearance in the Falcon area (adding to five existing sites nearby).
🎭 Culture
Local art events fill the calendar with ticketed shows, art walks and exhibitions in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas.
Highlights include the Aug. 22 Donkey Paintings opening at Ranch Gallery, First Friday art walks starting Sept. 4, and several exhibits running through Dec. 5 (see local listings for details).
Colorado Springs hosts a busy lineup of events, starting today with Hot Rod Rock and Rumble at Pikes Peak International Raceway and continuing with film festivals, comic cons, historical walks + art reveals at venues across the area through early October.
Colorado Springs voters have ranked the best coffee shops this week with Wayfinder Coffee Co. earning Gold, Loyal Coffee taking Silver, and Hold Fast Coffee Co. receiving Bronze—Jives Coffee Lounge is highlighted for its blend of coffee, music and community.
🏛️ Government
The City Council approved $458K in funding from marijuana sales tax to hire private security to patrol South Nevada Avenue after complaints about vandalism, theft, and drug sales.
Security will patrol daily and be aided by a drone, though no start date has been set.

During Overdose Awareness Month, Porch Light Health’s chief clinical officer Steve Carleton told Aspen Andrews about rising opioid overdoses from fentanyl and synthetic drugs in our community and urged residents to carry Narcan (a nasal spray to reverse overdoses) as Recovery Awareness Month begins Sept. 1.

The Broadmoor acquired the nearly 70-year-old El Pomar Foundation headquarters on Tuesday at 10 Lake Circle, and plans to turn the historic building into revenue-producing offices after El Pomar staff move out next summer (to reunite the campus for greater efficiency).
🏈 Sports
Colorado Springs’ Switchbacks won a 5-4 shootout against Spokane Velocity FC on Wednesday with Khori Bennett’s Panenka kick — the team will advance to the Cup semifinals on Sept.
9 and host Birmingham Legion FC as they resume regular-season play.
Colorado Rapids transferred star defender 18-year-old Lucas Herrington to Hull City for a record fee yesterday, marking the highest fee for an MLS defender.
Herrington, who played in all 18 matches this season & represented Australia at the World Cup, begins his career in the English Premier League.
