COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Facing a budget shortfall, the Salvation Army’s Family Hope Center will cut 16 of its 31 family rooms and lay off up to 10 staff starting Oct. 1—this change comes after January’s headcount showed record homelessness while the shelter continues to offer beds, meals, and support for families for up to three months.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • An 80-year-old man accused of killing his wife in 2024 stands trial in Colorado Springs — he has pleaded not guilty as prosecutors allege the murder followed her affair.  KVOR
  • Delays remain for the alleged Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Lewis Dear Jr. nearly 10 years after the 2015 Colorado Springs shooting that killed three people — his state case with 179 charges and his federal case with 68 felony charges are still in limbo and his next hearing is set for Nov. 13.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Michael Mcnish retraced his late mother Cheryl Bennett's steps in Colorado Springs after her body was found on Aug. 1 near Stetson Hills Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway—police continue an investigation and ask anyone with camera footage to come forward.  KOAA News5
  • Stephen Chan, 80, allegedly confessed to killing his wife execution-style after forcing her into a car on a rural road last year—her body was found on September 1—and his trial for first-degree murder began Tuesday.  11 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado College received a $2.5 million gift from the MacLean family to endow the Career Catalyst program—which connects classroom learning to professional work—to expand hands-on opportunities for students. The program, launched in 2024 and already offering a two-week course at Mattel, will add at least six new blocks over the academic year.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services announced that the free Trackchair Program will expand its hikes into Ute Valley Park and Bluestem Prairie Open Space by October—giving visitors with mobility challenges improved access to trails. The program will grow from 12 reservations to over 220 sessions and is designed to let more community members explore nature safely.  City of Colorado Springs
  • Manitou Springs leaders warned that the city’s general fund revenue will drop nearly 30% in 2026—roughly a $4 million loss—as Colorado Springs recreational sales draw customers away. City officials plan to raise other taxes, including on cog railway tickets, to help fund overdue infrastructure repairs.  Colorado Public Radio
  • The City Council voted Tuesday to split marijuana tax revenue—half for the Downtown Partnership’s Clean and Safe Pilot Program and half for PTSD treatment programs—while Mayor Mobolade argued that 60% should go to the police department to help with budget shortfalls.
