- ➤ Pikes Peak National Cemetery said cemetery director Skyler Holmes died unexpectedly last month at 43 and had served since June 2020 by ensuring every veteran received dignified services (such as flag placements) and respectful ceremonies (for unclaimed veterans), leaving colleagues deeply saddened. 11 News
- ➤ Local nonprofits in Colorado Springs reported budget shortfalls from lower federal funding and rising costs and asked for community help. Springs Rescue Mission cut staff, the Salvation Army seeks up to $1 million for its family shelter and Care and Share Food Bank reduced its budget by $1.35 million—groups that depend on private donations now face more demand for services. - ➤ Carie Hallford, a Colorado funeral home owner, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud after admitting she sent grieving families dry concrete instead of ashes and defrauded nearly $900,000; her sentencing will be held on Dec. 3 as prosecutors recommend up to 15 years though she faces a maximum of 20 years. - ➤ Joel Lang’s murder case was dismissed in June after prosecutors could not meet the higher clear and convincing burden to restore his competency to stand trial for the hit-and-drag death of 47-year-old Kristy Kerst in a Monument fast food parking lot—prompting local advocates and parents to push for changes to Colorado competency laws to give victims’ families more closure. 11 News

- ➤ Colorado Springs Fire Department is hosting its first Living with Wildfire Town Hall for eastern residents today at 6:30 p.m. at the Pavilion at Banning Lewis Ranch—firefighters will show drone footage of recent fires and review evacuation plans and emergency notifications. KOAA News5
- ➤ The Colorado State Patrol will set up four sobriety checkpoints on highways in Fountain, Gilpin County, Ridgeway and Archuleta County—beginning on August 15 in Fountain and Gilpin, on August 22 in Ridgeway, and on August 23 in Archuleta—to discourage impaired driving by reminding drivers that impairment includes alcohol, prescription drugs, marijuana and other substances. - ➤ Colorado State Patrol is urging drivers to stop on red during National Stop on Red Week from Aug. 3–Aug. 9 as 401 crashes in 2024 tied to traffic signal violations injured 85 and killed three. Troopers issued 1,539 citations to drivers in top counties including Douglas—169 citations, Arapahoe—162, Adams—156, El Paso—100, and Weld—83. FOX21
