Good morning, Colorado Springs. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 31st of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Colorado Springs reached a $3.2 million settlement with the family of Jeffrey Melvin Jr., a 27-year-old man who died in hospital after being tased by officers in 2018, as his family alleged the police did not properly train their officers—while the department said the deal was made by its insurance company to lower financial risk.  Colorado Public Radio
  • On Tuesday, Colorado Springs police raided the home of prolific drug offender Orvle Embry after his Sunday arrest and seized 17 rifles and four pistols—adding to earlier seizures that total 35 firearms, nearly 24,000 fentanyl pills, over 600 grams of methamphetamine, over 70 grams of cocaine, 51 grams of heroin and over $27,000 in cash, with his next court appearance set for Aug. 5.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Colorado Springs Police located a stolen green Chevrolet Silverado on Tuesday, July 29 near Austin Bluffs Parkway and North Academy Boulevard—after discovering a Glock 9mm handgun in the vehicle—and arrested 38-year-old Caleb Kirkland who now faces charges for motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, firearm theft, unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon, and obstruction.  FOX21
  • On Tuesday evening, Colorado Springs police arrested motor vehicle theft suspect Caleb Kirkland after he pulled a handgun and fled from an attempted traffic stop near Austin Bluffs Parkway — detectives later recovered his stolen green Chevrolet Silverado and booked him on charges including motor theft, vehicular eluding, and theft of a firearm while he received hospital treatment for minor injuries.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • A Colorado dentist was convicted of first-degree murder on Wednesday after poisoning his wife with cyanide—family members offered tearful testimony during his sentencing to life without parole in a Centennial courtroom.  FOX21

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Classes will start soon in D-20, but hundreds of students who registered to ride the bus still need to pick up their My Ride cards. Families can get the cards at the transportation office (7408-A Duryea Dr.) and then use the My Ride K-12 app for real‐time bus updates.  KOAA News5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Yemi Mobolade celebrated Colorado Springs' 154th birthday today by sharing a message of thanks and unity as he recovered from a recent health challenge and encouraged residents to build on the city’s proud legacy—reminding everyone of the values laid down by early pioneers.  City of Colorado Springs
  • Colorado lawmakers must cut $1 billion from the current budget because the GOP tax bill signed on July 4 reduced expected tax revenue by $1.2 billion. Presentations on Wednesday to the Legislative Council Executive Committee set the stage for Gov. Polis to call a special lawmaking term in coming weeks to fix the gap (lawmakers may close certain tax breaks and trim state spending).  Colorado Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.S. News and World Report ranked UCHealth Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs as the best hospital in the city for the fourth year in a row and tied with UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies for third-best in Colorado. The ranking, based on high performance in 13 care areas during the 2024 fiscal year, shows the hospital's focus on patient care — a strength that reassures the community.  KOAA News5
