Colorado Springs police responded to a package padlocked to a bus stop bench near Children's Hospital on Briargate Parkway on July 29th - the Regional Explosives Unit later found a local had secured personal belongings to prevent theft and no charges were filed.
Colorado Springs police identified two crash victims from a deadly incident at South Circle Drive and Hancock Expressway on July 5—Fernando Gallardo-Franco died on scene and Jorge Cruz later died on July 18—and arrested 20-year-old Chase Antonio Chason on charges of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
On July 24, a shooting at Rivon Gas and Convenience Store in Stratmoor led to the arrest of 23-year-old Miguel Mayo who faces charges of menacing and reckless endangerment—witnesses say an argument over fueling turned violent and the victim was not seriously injured.
Four people died in a crash earlier this month at South Powers Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard — the victims, a 17-year-old girl, 18-year-old Bryan Jaramillo, 19-year-old Gabriel Zelayia and 20-year-old Janet Pino-Lopez, were in one vehicle during a high-speed, DUI-related incident that police said is among the city's 26th through 29th traffic fatalities this year due to speeding, alcohol and unbuckled seatbelts.
The Colorado Springs Police Department found the missing at-risk 75-year-old Robert Morris safe after he was last seen Monday on Coneflower Lane near Barnes Road (he was described as 5-foot-3, 200-pound and wearing a dark blue t-shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes).
After an international search with 255 candidates, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic named French conductor Chloé Dufresne as its new Music Director—she was honored at the Ent Center for the Arts on July 29 and will begin with the 2025–26 season.
Dufresne plans to blend classic works by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky with contemporary pieces and educational concerts to bring fresh energy to the orchestra.
Some Colorado Springs students will join homeschool programs for the fall session as District 11’s Base Camp program starts on Aug.
25 at Trailblazer Elementary with mixed-grade classes, robotics, and field trips. In Monument, the Home School Enrichment Academy in Lewis-Palmer School District 38 will offer hands-on subjects, including escape rooms and art lessons, beginning Sept. 4 — meeting the demand for socialization among homeschooling families.
Ethan Welty (a longtime urban forager) co-founded the Falling Fruit website to map free edible resources in cities so residents can easily find fruit like pears and apples growing on public land.
The site compiles reviews and tree inventories to help people forage safely (with advice to seek permission on private property) and supports a vision of more edible urban landscapes.
