CRIME NEWS

  • Kevin Wells, 37, is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend Lisa West on May 13 at Mountain Shadows Apartments on Fontmore Road and a judge ruled Tuesday that he will face trial on a first-degree murder charge while he stays in jail (his next hearing is on Aug. 21).  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • An 18-year-old was arrested Tuesday after intentionally hitting a police cruiser near Wildflower Park and fleeing officers—she now faces charges of vehicular eluding, obstructing a peace officer, criminal trespass and criminal mischief.  11 News
  • A 60-year-old man was arrested in El Paso County after a disturbing 911 call on July 21 where dispatchers heard violent threats—he was found at a home on Parsonage Lane east of Cimarron Hills and deputies persuaded him to leave his porch before taking him into custody, and he now faces charges of menacing, prohibited use of weapons, and third-degree assault.  FOX21

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Colorado Springs released its 2024 Popular Annual Financial Report showing that 94,331 potholes were fixed and the police answered over 250,000 calls. CFO Charae McDaniel said the report explains how tax revenue supports upgrades to public safety, the airport & other essential projects.  City of Colorado Springs
  • On Monday, Colorado Springs released its 2024 financial report — it showed the city grew by thousands and focused on public safety, fixing roads, and housing — with over 94,000 potholes repaired and new drone programs started by police and fire. The report said more than $50 million was raised from sales tax and overall revenue reached $734 million, giving residents clear insight into city spending.  11 News
  • The Colorado Springs Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service announced Tuesday they will work together on wildfire risk mitigation on Forest Service land near the city limits. The first projects will begin in August on Old Stage Road and Gold Camp Road — areas with limited previous vegetation removal.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Corey Halstead, a burn survivor from a car fire in April 2024 that left him with burns to 50% of his body and required 30 surgeries, has started Healing Home Group to support burn survivors—he said the group is partnering with hotels to offer transitional housing and aims to secure a dedicated facility soon.  11 News
