CULTURE NEWS

  • A restored SB2C Helldiver made its debut flight on July 19 at the National Museum of World War II Aviation in Colorado Springs and is now one of only three flying aircraft. The plane was recovered near Seattle in the 1980s and restored by Westpac — a rare piece of history returning to the skies.  FOX21

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado College named Manya Whitaker its permanent president after serving as interim president since 2024. Whitaker, who held seven roles during 14 years at the college, said she will boost the block plan and expand understanding of liberal arts education & interdisciplinary studies.  Colorado Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The first battery energy storage system is now running in Colorado Springs and uses low-cost energy from solar panels and wind to store enough power for 20,000 homes for four hours during peak demand. Colorado Springs Utilities said the project, operated by a NextEra Energy subsidiary on a 16-acre site in Peyton, meets state decarbonization goals — saving customers money.  FOX21
  • Park staff discovered a rattlesnake at Rock Ledge Ranch — a spot where the snake could be harmed or harm people — and moved it half a mile to Garden of the Gods Park where it was safely released. Officials said staff only relocate snakes when they are found in risky areas to protect both the animal and the public.  FOX21
  • A critically endangered baby gorilla was born at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on July 21, and zoo officials confirmed the birth as a positive step for the species.  11 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Colorado Springs released its 2024 Popular Annual Financial Report today to detail the city’s financial status; the report shows nearly 60% of General Fund revenue comes from sales and use taxes + funds supporting police, fire, road repairs, and an airport that served over two million passengers.  KOAA News5
  • Colorado public media leaders are facing a funding gap after Congress cut federal funds last week that helped stations like Colorado Public Radio keep operating; leaders say many will need to boost fundraising and seek new federal dollars to fill the void. Some groups worry that these measures may not cover all costs + officials stress that close collaboration among stations is needed to maintain service in rural areas.  Colorado Public Radio
  • The Salvation Army in El Paso County asked Colorado Springs City Council for help on Monday to address a nearly $1 million budget gap for programs starting Oct. 1—if extra funds are not secured, its emergency shelter services for families may be reduced. The agency will launch a community fundraising campaign on Aug. 1 and is also seeking support from local governments and organizations.  Colorado Springs Gazette
