Good morning, Colorado Springs. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 19th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The annual Western Street Breakfast returned Wednesday morning to Tejon Street in Colorado Springs, filling downtown with the scent of pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, milk and coffee sold at $5 per plate. The event featured therapeutic miniature horses and Pikes Peak Range Riders—bringing thousands together to support local military families and honor Western tradition ahead of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in July.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • The wife of Mohamed Soliman, charged for the firebomb attack on Boulder marchers on June 1, said on Wednesday from an ICE detention center in Dilley—Texas that she and her five children are being treated harshly while they fight deportation and wait for their day in court.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Documents in a lawsuit filed in Texas allege that New Life Church leaders in Colorado Springs, including Senior Pastor Brady Boyd, knew for more than 20 years about a visiting pastor’s sexual improprieties with a minor that began 40 years ago (when the victim was 12) while local clergy dispute Boyd's claim that he learned of the abuse only last year.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The final unofficial count shows that 81.9% of voters opposed the Karman Line annexation—82,219 ballots were cast—in a Tuesday special election that challenged plans to develop nearly 1,900 acres for 6,500 homes and mixed-use space. City officials say the result reflects concerns over water and growth—issues that will be further addressed as the final results are certified on June 27.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • The Colorado Department of Transportation is planning to open a new Piñon rest area on I-25 near Pueblo County—El Paso County line to serve travelers in the Pikes Peak region after the old stations closed. Officials said construction may not start until 2027, and the vacant Piñon and Larkspur rest stops will be demolished.  Colorado Springs Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colorado lawmakers passed a law that will let the state board of health use vaccine recommendations from key physician groups besides the CDC—aiming to shield local immunization policy from federal changes while the state health department said its guidance remains unchanged. Experts said the move will help keep vaccine advice clear and science-based as measles cases rise and public confusion grows.  Colorado Public Radio
