COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The annual Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast takes place today on Pikes Peak Avenue as the Pikes Peak Range Riders serve pancakes, eggs, sausage and a beverage for $5 cash while featuring local acts to support military families. Attendees may also join a children’s costume contest and local performances before the riders start their week-long Peak Ride at 8 a.m.—breakfast ends at 9 a.m.  Colorado Public Radio
  • A Colorado Springs resident, Gail Lott, joined a genealogy workshop run by a local nonprofit that helps Black families learn about their history and family health. The nonprofit will also hold a Juneteenth celebration on June 19 at the Westside Community Center, located at 1620 West Bijou Street.  KOAA News5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Union workers at Colorado Springs Safeway stores voted overwhelmingly to join a strike over unfair work practices that started on June 15 in other cities + 99% of retail and meat department workers in Colorado Springs approved the action on June 17. Safeway said it is negotiating in good faith and disputes the union's claims.  FOX21

CRIME NEWS

  • Tuesday, an El Paso County judge ruled that prosecutor Brien Cecil’s extreme comments led to the disqualification of him and the entire 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office from prosecuting Rocky West in the Springs Rescue Mission stabbing case—West, who faces a first-degree murder charge for killing Isaiah Curtis Plair last July, will be reassigned and is set to appear for arraignment on July 8.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday night, votes were counted in the Colorado Springs Special Election on whether to annex 1,800 acres for the proposed Karman Line development near Schriever Space Force Base—initial results showed over 61,000 voters opposed and nearly 14,000 in favor from 67,593 returned ballots out of 335,364 registered voters.  11 News
  • Josh Shipley of Montrose traveled to Washington to meet lawmakers about the clean energy tax credit and warned that an abrupt end could cost his company jobs—he urged a gradual phase-out to avoid severe economic impact. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Malakai Norick met with legislators to share his personal experience with Medicaid changes that might affect his treatment—adding a human perspective to the national debate over the big bill.  Colorado Public Radio
