Good morning, Colorado Springs. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 15th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local veteran motorcycle organizations will escort Sergeant Orace J. Mestas' remains from Denver International Airport to Trinidad for a full military honors burial on June 18—his remains were identified on January 31 after he was declared missing on April 25, 1951. The Dignified Honors Run will begin at Pikes Peak Harley-Davidson in Colorado Springs at 7 a.m. and proceed to DIA, where the flight carrying his remains will arrive at 11:40 a.m.  FOX21

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Workers at a few Safeway and Albertsons stores in Estes Park, Pueblo, Fountain, and a Denver distribution center will strike today to protest claims of unfair labor practices, low staffing, and frozen wages, according to UFCW Local 7. The union said the limited action will expand if talks do not lead to a new contract — a step taken after seven months of stalled negotiations.  FOX21

CRIME NEWS

  • One man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a violent carjacking in Old Colorado City on Friday at 8:30 p.m.—police said multiple suspects fired shots during the altercation and fled in a white minivan along with the victim’s vehicle.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Organizer Justin Burns said Pikes Peak Pride lost its request for a City Council proclamation 30 days before the event—reflecting a shift from past support—while the parade route near the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum was changed to avoid construction and received backing when Mayor Yemi Mobolade and councilmember Kimberly Gold issued a proclamation of support. This decision comes as organizers plan to counter federal policy shifts and secure a strong turnout for the celebration.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USNORTHCOM announced Saturday morning it added extra security measures at its military installations to guard against terrorism—employees and visitors experienced longer wait times while the measures remained until further notice.  KOAA News5
  • Tejon Street in downtown Colorado Springs will close from Colorado Avenue to Pikes Peak Avenue from June 16 to 27 for stormwater pipeline work, and southbound lanes between Kiowa Street and Colorado Avenue will close from June 23 to July 2 for a natural gas main relocation while northbound lanes remain open between Kiowa and Pikes Peak Avenues.
