  • On Saturday, May 23, over 200 volunteers placed nearly 4,500 U.S. flags at Pikes Peak National Cemetery to honor fallen service members ahead of Memorial Day, and the flags will remain a week with removal scheduled Saturday morning.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • In a historic event, a runaway freight train crash on May 14, 1888 caused an explosion that leveled Fountain (creating a crater 10ft deep and 30ft wide) and resulted in three deaths, with the town rebuilding and honoring its legacy through museum tours and preserved landmarks.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Evergreen Heritage volunteers have spent years restoring and researching Colorado Springs’ oldest cemeteries – ensuring veterans’ legacies are recognized. The group now is ordering new headstones to honor over 4,800 veterans uncovered through detailed research.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Today, Memorial Day, residents pause to honor fallen soldiers and remember Lt. Colonel Carlin J. Kielcheski + a local Air Force combat illustrator whose artwork remains part of the Academy's collection, reminding the community of the sacrifices made in war.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Territory Days celebrated its 50th anniversary May 24 as the three-day festival in Old Colorado City — between 23rd and 27th streets — featured over 250 vendors, a giant inflatable octopus, and a climbing wall for children.  Colorado Springs Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school senior Kyle Blasi showcased his documentary filmmaking skills with his short film For the Fogeys, which premiered at Colorado College after his time at the Youth Documentary Academy in summer 2025.
