ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The FAA reported that two passengers died in a Colorado plane crash—officials are investigating the cause—to determine what led to the accident.  11 News
  • A crash Monday afternoon on I-25 between Garden of the Gods Road and North Nevada Avenue stopped traffic in both northbound and southbound lanes — Colorado Springs police reported no injuries.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • A fire at a storage unit facility in the 3800 block of Van Teylingen Drive — near North Academy Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway — claimed one life Sunday evening at about 8:45 p.m. as firefighters extinguished the blaze while police investigate the death and await the coroner’s report.  KOAA News5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local veterans Chris and AnneMarie Carr opened D1 Training Southern Colorado on Monday in southern Colorado Springs where the gym operates full-time from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.—they plan to launch an NIL program in late June to sponsor athletes from 13 high schools with over $40,000 a year.  11 News

CRIME NEWS

  • The Colorado Springs Police Department said a juvenile male was arrested on charges of second-degree murder for a February homicide on Granada Drive, west of the Hancock and South Academy intersection, where officers found a vehicle with two victims, one 16-year-old who died and another who was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds (the suspect's identity is withheld as he is a minor).  11 News
  • A convicted felon on parole, James Hummel, was arrested on multiple charges after he allegedly fled a hit-and-run crash on Manitou Avenue on May 12 at 12:30 p.m. and was later captured hiding in a backyard—he is also accused of assaulting an officer.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • On Monday, Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade testified in court about a staged hate crime involving a burning cross and a defaced campaign sign—he became emotional after the defense described the act as political theater.  KOAA News5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lewis-Palmer School District 38 announced Monday evening that the Board of Education unanimously selected Amber Whetstine as the new superintendent. Whetstine, who has served as assistant and interim superintendent (since 2021), will officially take over on July 1 (after input from staff, parents and community members).  11 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Air Force Academy is offering 3,000 free tickets for its graduation ceremony on May 29 at Falcon Stadium, with gates opening at 6 a.m. Members of the public can obtain up to four mailed tickets per adult from the Visit Colorado Springs office or Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce—tickets are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.  11 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new Bradley Ridge Apartments project southeast of the airport in Colorado Springs will be the state's first low-income residential development to include an on-site child care center (offering 70 seats for young children) and 336 rental units for families earning 60% or less of the area median income. Voter-approved Land Banking funds and bond support will help close the deal in October as the first phase will open in spring.  Colorado Springs Gazette
