  • Matthew Lara, founder of Golden Paws LLC, introduced his natural pet food recipe after switching his husky mix Thor from kibble at his Colorado Springs kitchen, and his recipe received FDA + state Department of Agriculture approval.   • Pikes Peak Rock Shop (a 90-year-old gem on CO 24 in Cascade) offers a wide array of minerals, gems and crystals. Bryan Engle, who returned from military service 12 years ago, now runs the shop that connects locals and travelers through its trusted legacy.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Two historic memorials built by the Penrose family offer quiet spaces and a look into local heritage.   • The Pikes Peak Library District hosted its 20th annual Mountain of Authors event at Library 21-C, featuring more than 80 Colorado writers who met readers and publishers and took part in free teen writing workshops in celebration of the U.S. 250th and Colorado 150th anniversaries.  KOAA News5
  • Pikes Peak will host a doughnut dunking record attempt on Aug 1 as part of Colorado 150th birthday celebrations, drawing 250 participants to dunk doughnuts in coffee, plus organizers have added sunset viewing on July 4 and Aug 1 with timed entry permits running through Sept. 30 to manage rising visitors.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • New data shows that local families in El Paso County earned about $110,000 in 2024 - roughly $25,000 less than the living wage needed for four, while a median home price of $485,000 may cost nearly $2,900 per month in mortgage payments, making housing hard to afford.  Colorado Springs Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colorado College President Manya Whitaker addressed nearly 500 graduates during today’s commencement at Ed Robson Arena, challenging them to build on the nation’s 250-year legacy.   • Freedom Elementary student Giovanni Gio Bishop-Falu founded CEO Squeeze and now teaches his classmates to spend, save, invest, and give on his youth money tour using glow sticks. His program began with a small family investment and meets twice a month during the school year.  KOAA News5
  • Madeline Sprinz, a Rampart High School senior, will begin studying aerospace engineering at Colorado School of Mines in Golden this fall. She first got inspired at the Colorado Springs Airport and now mentors local students and leads fundraising for blood cancer research (honoring a friend lost to leukemia).  Colorado Springs Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Philanthropy on the Farm gathered supporters at Spruce Mountain Ranch in Larkspur today with farm-to-table meals, dancing & stories from former patients. The sold-out event raised more than $700,000 to benefit Children’s Hospital.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • The Rockies are weighing options for Senzatela and Moniak ahead of the MLB trade deadline on Aug. 3 when they host the Rays at Coors Field.
