COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department is opening many water attractions for Memorial Day weekend, with downtown fountains and splash pads set to open on May 24 and a spray ground at Deerfield Hills scheduled for June 1. Outdoor pools at Monument Valley and Wilson Ranch will welcome visitors with day passes starting May 24, while some facilities remain closed for safety assessments (details may change based on weather).  City of Colorado Springs

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire at the Greenway Flats apartments south of downtown Colorado Springs left one person with minor smoke inhalation and made four of the 65 units uninhabitable while the building was evacuated—the cause is under investigation.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • One person died after an apparent shooting in the parking lot of Park Hill Shopping Center on May 16th as officers arrived at 2:47 p.m.—they are investigating the homicide and speaking with one person of interest while the center is closed for a few hours.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred Friday when officers arrived at 2:50 a.m. near Cheyenne Boulevard and Cresta Road—finding a woman with a gunshot wound who was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and no arrests have been made.  11 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Colorado Springs poet Jimmy Sena introduces his new book Tesla's Walk: An Invitation to Tesla's Colorado Springs, which uses narrative verse to show Nikola Tesla’s day in town during his eight-month visit from May 1899 to January 1900. He will be featured at the free Mountain of Authors event today at Library 21c (the book was nominated for awards and is available at local bookstores).  Colorado Springs Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At UCCS on May 16, over 1,600 graduates earned their degrees at Broadmoor World Arena while students from various colleges celebrated with family support. The ceremony awarded 24 PhDs, more than 350 master’s, and over 1,200 undergraduate degrees — many graduates credited their families for helping them succeed.  FOX21

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting May 19, traffic on Tejon Street north of Pikes Peak Avenue will change as crews use heavy equipment to move a fire hydrant along a 200 foot section of the southbound lane; the lane will resume its normal pattern on May 23 and nearby businesses will not face water service interruptions — the project also expands outdoor dining areas and sidewalks to boost safety and business activity.  City of Colorado Springs
  • Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services released its annual report that highlighted 2024 successes like reopening the historic 1903 courthouse as the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum after an $8.2 million upgrade—adding 4,000 square feet of exhibit space—while also opening Antlers Park Dog Park and upgrading irrigation systems to save up to 20% water.  City of Colorado Springs
