- ➤ Pine Creek High School student Shayna Kudumula is beginning her pre-med physiology degree at UCLA this fall after creating a mosquito-repellent solution for Nigerian communities and leading a statewide epilepsy campaign in Colorado. - ➤ Quinn Pascual, a Discovery Canyon Campus High School senior, overcame Kawasaki disease (diagnosed as a toddler) and has led school fundraisers and charity drives while excelling in track and field; he was accepted to Princeton and is aiming for a spot in the 2028 Summer Olympics. - ➤ Naomi Kruse, a 17-year-old named one of The Gazette’s Best and Brightest, uses her project Paper for the Planet to help wildfire communities recover and teach students about nature. - ➤ Middle school students at Banning Lewis Prep are asking the community to create a space for reading, writing, and connecting since local coffee shops and bookstores do not serve teens well. - ➤ El Paso County schools in Districts 11 and 49 will share campuses to use space better, as Orton Academy moves to Trailblazer, East Hills co-locates with Horace Mann, and Falcon Elementary joins Bennett Ranch. - ➤ Colorado has adopted its first statewide wildfire building code in areas with high fire risk, requiring new construction to use fire-resistant materials and repairs exceeding 25 percent to meet new standards -- local districts can create wildfire intensity maps, and compliance is due by July 1. - ➤ Residents in Settlers Ranch have asked to lower Hodgen Road’s speed from 55 mph to 40 mph — a county study is underway, with results expected by July to address safety and noise issues. KOAA News5
