ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Colorado Springs firefighters battled a grass fire near I-25 between Cimarron and Tejon Streets on Sunday afternoon — the blaze produced heavy smoke and led to street closures on Cimarron and Eighth Streets as crews worked to control it.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Colorado Springs native Aléna Watters returns home to star as Diana Goodman in the award-winning musical Next to Normal at Denver Center for the Performing Arts, which runs Tuesday through Sunday until May 3 – ticket prices range from $47 to $114.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • The Gazette family (The Denver Gazette, The Colorado Springs Gazette and Colorado Politics) won 51 awards Saturday at the Society of Professional Journalists’ Top of the Rockies contest, earning honors for investigative reporting, feature design and breaking news. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 22, the Elbert County Board of Commissioners announced a motion for reconsideration after the Public Utilities Commission approved permits for Xcel Energy’s transmission segment along the Plains – to – Pines Scenic Corridor. Local officials say the move backs Gov. Polis’ renewable goals yet conflicts with county regulations.  Colorado Springs Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Red Ribbon Ball at Hotel Polaris raised funds for Colorado Health Network to support people living with HIV in Pikes Peak with a goal of raising $120,000 to help purchase a new facility in Colorado Springs (guests enjoyed live entertainment and auction items).  KOAA News5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cale Makar led the Avalanche to a series sweep of the Kings by scoring a key goal in the second period; his play secured the team’s advance to the second round against either Minnesota or Dallas. Coach Bednar praised his shift from individual focus to team wins.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • No player finishing college in Colorado was drafted, but 11 athletes from state schools signed as undrafted free agents with NFL teams.
