COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Steve Pelican— a former district court judge and mediator known for championing cystic fibrosis awareness— died on April 4 at age 79, and he was praised for his calm approach in crises and his work to help others. A joyful remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the historic El Paso County Courtroom at the Pioneers Museum to honor his legacy of selfless giving.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Today, Motorless Morning returns to Garden of the Gods from 5 a.m. to noon as the park is closed to vehicles—letting cyclists, joggers, skaters, dog walkers and riders enjoy the trails while free entry and nearby parking support the event.  11 News
  • A new Kent Olin Field Plaza opened today at El Pomar Youth Sports Park to offer improved facilities for young athletes and families in Colorado Springs—developed over three years, the plaza includes upgraded bathrooms, a concession stand, a pavilion, and a practice field with a rebound wall.  KOAA News5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • CSFD responded to a fire at a duplex on the 400 block of Olive Street near Uintah and North 19th at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 26 and brought the fire under control by 11:45 a.m.—no injuries were reported.  FOX21
  • Four residents were displaced after a fire broke out in a duplex near Old Colorado City on Saturday morning, and nearly 30 firefighters with six engines responded and controlled the blaze within 20 minutes — no injuries were reported — while officials said residents in an adjacent unit might be displaced if utilities cut power.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • Dozens of law enforcement officers, including the DEA (the lead agency) and FBI (assisting federal partners), carried out an early morning operation in Colorado Springs today and escorted people from a club while serving a warrant for criminal activity.  Denver7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With warmer weather bringing more pedestrians, joggers, and bicyclists to the streets, the Colorado Springs Police Department advises motorists to slow down and give at least 3 feet of space when passing bikes. The Colorado Department of Transportation also urges bicyclists to ride predictably and obey traffic signals—helping everyone share the road safely.  FOX21
  • The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin highway safety projects on April 28th to install rumble strips and enhance pavement striping on five highways in El Paso, Park, Pueblo, and Teller counties. Construction crews will work from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day with expected traffic delays and temporary road closures (a shift to a Sunday–Thursday schedule has not yet been scheduled).  KOAA News5

HEALTH NEWS

  • During April's drug takeback event, 1,373 pounds of expired prescription drugs and opioids were collected at several drop-off sites including one at the Widefield Parks and Rec Center—helping to reduce the risk of overdose and poisoning. Jennifer Lang from El Paso County Public Health said the three-year effort encourages residents to dispose of medicines safely every day.  FOX21
