COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A report by the Common Sense Institute found Colorado’s homeless population increased 90% since 2020, marking the fourth highest percentage rise nationally and ranking the state ninth with 3.14 per 1,000 residents. The report said work-first models used in Colorado Springs helped El Paso County reduce homelessness by 12% and urged flexible funding to support self-sufficiency.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • Colorado Springs police are searching for three suspects in an armed robbery that occurred Friday night on the city's eastside—officers said the masked, gloved, all-black suspects demanded cash and merchandise at a business on North Circle Drive south of Galley Road before fleeing the scene without injuries reported.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Colorado Springs Police are asking for help finding 13-year-old Somaya Schmidt, who was last seen at 9 p.m. Friday, April 18 in the 2500 block of Wimbleton Court and is described as a black female (5'7", 160 pounds with black hair, brown eyes, and wearing a light-colored off-the-shoulder sweatshirt, black leggings, and Nike shoes) while urging anyone with information to call 719-444-7000.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Colorado Springs police charged Tyler Pittman and Charles Robbins after arresting them in connection with armed robberies at convenience stores on Feb. 11 and March 10; both remain in jail with bonds set at $25,000 and $27,000 respectively.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At least 22 international students at local universities had their F-1 visas revoked before today, and six are filing lawsuits against the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement—agencies accused of failing to notify them properly. Their lawyer said the students worry they could face deportation as the government defends its actions.  11 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers from Mayberry Communities, LLC presented a revised plan for a 630-acre project near Ellicott, about 10 miles east of Colorado Springs city limits—raising the planned build-out capacity to 2,800 homes with mixed-use areas and high-density zones. The proposal was approved by the El Paso County Planning Commission and now awaits review by the Board of County Commissioners along with further steps such as water availability findings.  Colorado Springs Gazette
