CRIME NEWS

  • Police reported a road rage crash on Interstate 25 near Garden of the Gods Road in north Colorado Springs at about 6:30 p.m. Friday left one person dead and several injured, and officers arrested a man aged 44 on felony charges.  Colorado Springs Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A forest fire is burning near Turkey Tracks Shooting Range north of Woodland Park and has consumed about 150 acres with 0% containment as a helicopter assists with efforts. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office + Teller County Sheriff's Office, along with the Office of Emergency Management and the U.S. Forest Service, say windy, hot, and dry conditions are making it hard to control the blaze and campers are urged to evacuate.  FOX21
  • A forest fire near Turkey Tracks Shooting Range started at 4:24 p.m. and has grown to about 150 acres near Highway 67 and Rainbow Falls—officials have moved shooters and campers while teams from the Forest Service, Office of Emergency Management, and local sheriff's offices work to contain the blaze. A Colorado City family reported that illegal dumping near their home is raising safety concerns and authorities plan to coordinate with the health department to remove the trash.  KOAA News5
  • Agencies are fighting the Turkey Tracks Fire north of Woodland Park, working to contain the blaze that started last night.  11 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 33 on March 31 that stops grocery and big-box stores from expanding hard liquor sales so small independent alcohol retailers can compete after changes in beer and wine sales hurt their businesses. Lawmakers passed the measure with strong bipartisan support—ensuring a fair chance for local retailers.  Colorado Public Radio
  • The El Paso County Sheriff's Office held its Wildland Fire Academy graduation this week in Colorado Springs when five cadets earned their Firefighter I Certification—after completing over 325 hours of training starting March 5. The academy taught skills like fire tool maintenance and emergency protocols—preparing the volunteers to help fight wildfires.  KOAA News5
  • The Colorado Springs City Council will be sworn in at the Pioneers Museum South Lawn on Tuesday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m.—attendees are advised to use the city parking garages as Vermijo Street will be closed from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m., and later the council will meet at City Hall to elect new leadership. A Colorado City family reported illegal dumping near their home is a safety issue—officials will work with the health department to clear the trash and reduce potential hazards.  KOAA News5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wellpath, the private healthcare provider for the El Paso County jail from 2020 to 2023, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as families sue after over 20 prisoners died from poor care—one case includes Adison Reed who died from high blood sugar. The jail now uses a new provider and the bankruptcy plan—using a trust of up to $5 million—may mean many families get only a small part of what is owed.  Colorado Springs Gazette
