COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Supporters of Rockrimmon Library, closed last year by Pikes Peak Library District officials, opened an interim library at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Vindicator Drive and handed out over 40 free library cards during a soft opening on April 3. The temporary facility will run on set hours until its grand opening will occur on May 10—while advocates continue to push for a closer library for the neighborhood.  Pikes Peak Bulletin

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At USAFA, a cadet said nurse Alicia Shamblin saved his life when she rushed to help after his parachute failed on July 31, 2023—he later thanked her at an award ceremony on March 31.  FOX21

CRIME NEWS

  • Colorado Springs police are seeking help to find 12 year old Savhene Franklin, last seen Wednesday on the 1700 block of Chelton Road, and 13 year old Wilmesyz Luz Ortegas Rojas, seen at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday on the 5100 block of Airport Road (7194447000).  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Authorities arrested a man wanted for felony eluding and a woman with unrelated warrants on Wednesday morning in Colorado Springs after officers found over 23,000 fentanyl pills, heroin, other drugs, and 14 guns in a vehicle on South Cascade Avenue—additional paraphernalia was seized from the man’s house before both were booked at the Colorado Justice Center.  KVOR
  • A Colorado Springs police officer, Neil Jackson, was arrested on Thursday for stalking—first-degree misconduct and cybercrime after officials began investigating on April 4; he has been placed on paid administrative leave and booked into El Paso County Jail.  11 News
  • Colorado Springs Police said 13-year-old Akilah Shameah Stokes was last seen on April 10 at 3 p.m. near Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy on the 4200 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue and described her as 4-foot-1, 90 pounds with brown eyes and black hair while wearing a blue shirt and grey sweatpants; anyone with information is urged to call 719-444-7000.  11 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Colorado Springs received a $250,000 grant from Colorado Parks and Wildlife and other agencies to build 2.5 miles of new trails and upgrade access to Pulpit Rock at Austin Bluffs Open Space. Design is complete and contractors will be chosen soon—trail closures will be announced before work begins.  11 News
  • The Colorado Springs City Council voted six to one on Monday, April 7 to allow a 27-story high-rise downtown after residents raised concerns about blocking mountain views while developers said the project will include 400 housing units including 40 affordable ones. The council also passed an ordinance on Accessory Dwelling Units—aligning local rules with state law for a June 30 effective date—and set a referendum on a proposed annexation for a 6,000-home project with ballots mailed May 23 and due by June 17.  Pikes Peak Bulletin
  • Colorado leaders are fighting to keep U.S. Space Command at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs as lawmakers from Alabama, Florida, and Arizona push for a move later in April. State officials say the relocation may cost up to $4 billion and harm the local economy while measures are being proposed to retain the command.  11 News
  • Elected officials in Colorado are urging that US Space Command remain at Peterson Space Force Base—warn that moving it would harm local support and delay military readiness, while a decision from Alabama may assign headquarters to Huntsville later in April.
