  • Last week during a homeless camp cleanup in Colorado Springs, about two dozen people expressed gratitude for Westside CARES—an Old Colorado City nonprofit that offers housing solutions and vital support services to low-income residents. The organization also helped residents obtain important documents amid ongoing funding cuts and rising community needs.  KOAA News5
  • A local WWII veteran celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday in Colorado Springs as friends and family gathered to mark his milestone life and service — Jim Akin, known for his flying adventures, is planning another skydiving trip soon.  FOX21

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded with a second alarm Tuesday at Musashi restaurant — shutting down Northbound Academy Boulevard at East La Salle Street while investigators work to determine the fire’s cause.  KOAA News5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The city of Colorado Springs has issued seven recreational marijuana licenses to existing medical marijuana businesses — five for stores and two for cultivation — in preparation for recreational sales beginning April 14.  Colorado Springs Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Five people were arrested in connection to a deadly shooting on January 16th at a house on Dove Creek Circle in Security Widefield where 19-year-old Jonah Thirkill was shot dead and three others received minor injuries—police say charges include aggravated robbery and first-degree murder.  KVOR
  • Colorado Springs police identified 65-year-old Zonya Minor as the homicide victim found at a home in the 800 block of Yuma Street near North Circle Drive and East Platte Avenue around 7:25 p.m. on April 5 — 66-year-old Garcia Dudley was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder after a verbal and physical dispute.  FOX21

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calhan School District launched an AI tool called ZeroEyes that scans existing school cameras for weapons and alerts first responders in three to five seconds. The system—funded by state safety grants—works without new hardware and protects privacy by not streaming or storing biometric data.  11 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City council affirmed a 1,900-acre annexation for the planned Karman Line development near Schriever Space Force Base after petitioners gathered enough signatures to force a ballot vote with a 6—3 split; a special election on June 17 will decide its future as 330,000 ballot packets are mailed to voters.  Colorado Public Radio
  • Colorado Springs City Council denied an appeal to stop a 27-story apartment complex from being built in downtown Colorado Springs on Monday. The One Vela project at Sahwatch and West Costilla will become the city’s tallest building with a mixed-use design — officials did not announce when construction will begin.  KVOR
