COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The El Paso County Fair in Calhan will celebrate 120 years with themed days and classic activities from July 12 to 19. The event will feature free exhibits along with auto races on July 12 and 18, rodeo competitions on July 13 and 17, and a demolition derby on July 19.  El Paso County

CRIME NEWS

  • Colorado Springs police asked for help finding 13-year-old Trevor Bennet, who was last seen early Monday morning on Harwood Circle near Chelton Road and Jet Wing Drive wearing an orange and black camo jacket, black shirt, black sweatpants and no shoes (he has a scar on his left knee and a henna tattoo on his right forearm).  11 News
  • Colorado sexual assault survivors have waited over a year and a half for DNA test results from their evidence kits due to staffing shortages and testing delays caused by a former scientist’s errors—state lawmakers and the Bureau are now planning to hire more scientists and outsource testing to clear the backlog by 2027.  Colorado Public Radio
  • 31 year old Julian Vigil died from a gunshot wound after a shooting on the east side of Colorado Springs April 1 — police have not made any arrests and are still investigating the homicide.  Colorado Springs Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Workers are building a wildlife overpass just north of Monument Hill and south of Greenland on I-25 to help big animals like elk, mule deer and pronghorn cross safely— it is the final phase of the project and will be finished by the end of the year.  KVOR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A resident appealed the downtown approval for a 27-story apartment building developed by The O'Neil Group and VeLa, and a special city council meeting is set for 1 p.m. on Monday to review the appeal—if built, the project would add 400 residential units and retail space while becoming the tallest building in the area.   KOAA News5
  • Mayor Yemi said the city filled over 16,000 potholes and will soon start 2C road paving projects on Oro Blanco Drive, Flying W Ranch Road, Cheyenne Boulevard, and South Chelton Road—along with the Downtown Tejon Street revitalization project that begins this month. He added the city will update its Park System Master Plan, nearly complete the Garden of the Gods waterline installation with eight new hydrants and accessible trail, and step up enforcement on illegal campsites after recent wildfire threats—actions meant to keep roads, parks, and public spaces safe.  City of Colorado Springs
