  • Cari Brown built a Facebook group into a community of over 3,000 book lovers and opened Star Creations by Cari, a boutique for readers at 103 S. Main St. in Fountain + the store was honored by the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 31.  Colorado Springs Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • The History Colorado exhibit (buffalo soldiers: reVision) at Fort Garland highlights Buffalo Soldier John Taylor’s journey from slavery to freedom and his role in bridging cultures during the Civil War and Indian Wars; the display features artwork and primary documents to bring his legacy to life during Black History Month.  Colorado Springs Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Farmers and volunteer fire teams responded to a recent hay fire in rural areas when strong winds spread flames across fields and roads. They used tractors and water tanks to protect cattle and property (county crews also closed highways for safety).  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A study by the Common Sense Institute found that Colorado Medicaid spending reached $16 billion in 2025 (a 101% increase from 2015) even as enrollment nearly returned to previous levels. Researchers add that lawmaker policies contributed nearly $858 million in extra annual costs.  Colorado Springs Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veteran care in Colorado Springs will change as the VA plans to offer $1 trillion in contracts over 10 years to expand community care and cut long wait times — Rep. Crank met with locals and visited the busy Lindstrom Clinic last week to help shape future legislation.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Brackets for 6A-5A basketball have been released for over 20 area schools, with the state tournament starting Tuesday at Denver Coliseum & running until March 14. Cheyenne Mountain earned the fifth seed for the boys while Air Academy secured the sixth seed for the girls.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Colorado athletes shone at the Winter Olympics as Erie native Jaccob Slavin helped the U.S. men's hockey team win gold, marking the first win since the 1980 Miracle on Ice. Local stars also excelled in figure skating, moguls, snowboarding, and bobsled events.  Colorado Springs Gazette
