  • Girl Scout cookie season kicked off on Sunday in the Pikes Peak region as local scouts sold cookies and introduced the new Exploremores flavor; some troops plan to donate extras to first responders (police and firefighters) if they exceed their goals.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • After facing homelessness last year, Sylvestor Brown now cooks free meals at Prospect Lake using his own money & supports neighbors in need.  11 News
  • Drip Coffee House and Gleneagle Candle Co. in Monument are run by siblings who build local ties by hosting pop-up events and positive community chats. The candle shop owner (Nicole Mendoza) works for epilepsy awareness and supports local vendors.  KOAA News5

  • Jerry Morris of Seven’s Gate Taproom and Cerberus Brewing Co. crafted chandeliers from reused bike parts while updating the venue’s historic charm. He and his partner put their west-side brewery up for sale last year, and the 63-year-old plans new art projects and bar designs (retirement remains merely a thought).  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • L3Harris Technologies earned a $62.7 million contract modification to maintain the nation’s space surveillance system as part of the MOSSAIC program at its Colorado Springs facility. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Colorado Symphony performed sold-out shows in New York on Jan. 31 at Carnegie Hall and Radio City with Gregory Alan Isakov and Itzhak Perlman, marking their tour debut since 1974. The performances boosted their profile as they seek national recognition.  Colorado Public Radio
  • A New York nonprofit launched a billboard campaign in Colorado Springs to fight antisemitism — the billboards near Peterson Space Force Base and along Interstate 25 will run through March.  Colorado Springs Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Widefield District 3 board interviewed three superintendent finalists on Jan. 30; current assistant superintendent Howell, assessment director Houtchens, and Arizona’s Shelmon Brown were asked about priorities and leadership. The board will decide on a new leader on Feb. 19.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mountain Metro Transit is proposing a free Route 3 bus and increased frequency to ease congestion — reducing parking hassles for visitors. The public can comment online until Feb. 5 and if approved, services will expand on March 29.  Colorado Springs Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jaccob Slavin, a Carolina Hurricanes defenseman who grew up near Colorado Springs and played at Colorado College, will represent Team USA at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina (driven by his faith). He overcame recent injuries and remains focused on his performance on ice.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Nike is showing off a new Team USA collection that features Garden of the Gods imagery on a jacket’s lining — linking Colorado Springs landmarks with Olympic spirit and available now as the Winter Olympics will start this Friday.  KOAA News5
