COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new Park System Assessment shows that residents support improving park amenities (restrooms, shade, lighting, and trail connectivity) as part of an update to the city’s master plan. Findings will be presented to City Council at a public work session on Monday.  Colorado Springs Business Journal
  • El Paso County residents can recycle natural Christmas trees at Rocky Top Resources (1755 E. Las Vegas St) until Jan. 31. Donations help local youth sports programs as discarded trees are turned into mulch for parks and utilities.  Colorado Springs Gazette

  • Angelo’s Taverna and Carboy Winery will launch a new full-service restaurant and tasting room with rooftop views of Pikes Peak this summer at 7115 Commerce Center Drive—renovations are underway in the former Old Chicago Pizza + Taproom site to blend Italian classics with Colorado’s wine tradition.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • State records show the Costco Fuel Center at 5897 Barnes Road in Colorado Springs sold gasoline mixed with diesel fuel from a statewide error affecting stations mainly in Denver, with over 400 complaints filed. CRIME NEWS

  • Several schools went on lockdown after receiving phone threats on Wednesday morning — Colorado Springs School District 11 said only Coronado High School was affected and no credible threats have been confirmed.  11 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Almost 100 kids will bring the musical 'The Prince of Egypt' to life at the Ent Center for the Arts on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday and Sunday (1 and 6 p.m.). Tickets range from $22.75 to $29.50 and this is the region’s first production of the show.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County will close a segment of Beacon Lite Road on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 8:00 a.m. through Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 4:00 p.m.—crews will install a Town of Monument water main connection and traffic will detour via Wakonda Way.  El Paso County
  • Later this week, the U.S. Highway 24/Peterson Road Interchange Project will close the southbound right lane on Peterson Road south of Highway 24 for several weeks. Other lanes remain open (marked green on maps) to allow access to the Space Force Base north gate.  City of Colorado Springs

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local hospitals are addressing a nurse shortage by launching new recruitment and retention programs to maintain patient care in Colorado Springs—administrators expect revised scheduling and targeted hiring to ease staffing pressures in the coming weeks.  11 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Katie Sunderlin, the Housing Solutions Manager, said the city is building over 1,000 affordable units and updating land use codes to ease the housing shortage as rapid growth increases demand (a housing action plan meeting will invite community input).  KOAA News5
