Good morning, Colorado Springs. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 12th of January.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A UC Berkeley study finds that overtime rules in agriculture led to fewer working hours and lower earnings — with similar trends in other states, the results are prompting local ag employers and lawmakers to reevaluate Colorado’s overtime policy for crop workers last passed in 2022.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Colorado Springs Utilities has launched Energy Wise, a program that charges a higher rate for energy used during peak hours (5-9 p.m.) through April. The new pricing affects customers, including those new since October 2025, and could lead to a small increase in bills if usage habits remain unchanged.  Colorado Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Colorado Springs Parks Department has enhanced connectivity in North Cheyenne Cañon by linking Lower Columbine, Middle Columbine, and Creekside Trails, offering hikers easier access from the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center (2120 S. Cheyenne Canyon Road). Park hours and leash rules apply.  Colorado Springs Gazette
  • Crews will begin controlled burns at Fort Carson and the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site northeast of Trinidad this winter into early spring. The burns aim to reduce dead fuels (such as dry grasses and trees) and prevent larger wildfires while local fire departments stay informed via the Mountain Post.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Springs veterans worry that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s move to reduce retired Sen. Kelly’s rank and pay may silence local voices. Some fear the censure could discourage veterans from speaking out on military issues (a shared concern among many former servicemembers).  Colorado Springs Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Colorado Springs figure skaters Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea finished second at the U.S. Nationals on Friday in Paris and will represent Team USA in the upcoming Winter Olympics (per the U.S. Figure Skating news release).  KOAA News5
  • Colorado ski areas such as Ski Cooper, Monarch Mountain, and Wolf Creek used snow-farming techniques to harvest scarce natural snowfall and open nearly all trails last month. Teams operated snowmobiles and manual labor to shift snow as part of efforts during a dry winter start.  Colorado Springs Gazette
