COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Norwood Development Group plans a luxury Catbird Hotel at the northwest corner of Moreno and Cascade with 180 rooms and attainable housing funded through tax increment financing. Mill Street residents—organized as a community coalition—seek renewed talks with Norwood to address concerns over rising displacement, with discussions set to resume soon.  Pikes Peak Bulletin
  • About 30 Colorado Springs residents gathered outside the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday night to call for justice for Renee Good, a local woman whose family still lives in the area.  11 News
  • The Fountain Creek Regional Trail will close temporarily starting Monday, Jan. 12 for a powerline upgrade by Colorado Springs Utilities; the closure extends through Friday, Apr. 24 (covering the route from Stratmoor Valley Park to Camping World). Northbound users should turn around at John Ceresa Memorial Park.  El Paso County

  • Veteran-owned Sushi Mori opened in late November at 4980 Edison Ave. in a new building in front of Asian Pacific Market; Liyan Jin (a U.S. Army veteran) designed the minimalist interior while the chef uses 30 years of experience to serve artful sushi and sashimi.  Colorado Springs Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Colorado’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.9% in November from 4.1% in September, with 125,900 unemployed individuals (a decrease of 8,400) reported after October data was skipped due to a federal shutdown delay; job and participation numbers also declined compared to previous months.  Colorado Springs Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Springs released a Waste Diversion Action Plan to boost recycling from 16% to 37% by 2045. Deputy Chief of Staff Ryan Trujillo said the plan expands recycling education — offering toolkits for local businesses, schools, and multi-family housing with state fees supporting added costs starting 2026.  Colorado Springs Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Springs road crews pretreated roadways with extra deicer tanks yesterday— a shift from the usual 5,000 gallons— in preparation for today's storm, and they expect to clear primary roads through Friday as high winds and freezing temperatures make travel hazardous.  KOAA News5
  • The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order east of Yoder on Wednesday afternoon — residents were advised to leave the area due to an active fire.  11 News
  • Fountain residents are invited to vote on two City Hall fountain designs to replace the flood-damaged structure until the City Council workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 13 (each design honors the anniversaries of America, Colorado, and Fountain).  KOAA News5
  • Federal officials froze Colorado’s child care funds, raising concerns that the state could lose $91M by Jan. 31, which may interrupt services for 27,000 children & more than 18,000 families. Gov. Polis said state agencies are working with local providers to show the program meets federal safeguards.  Colorado Public Radio
  • In December, Colorado Springs crews filled 6,758 potholes—improving road conditions citywide—before winter ended.  11 News

  • During their game in Tampa Bay on Tuesday, the Avalanche suffered back-to-back regulation losses yet maintained a significant lead in points & defense through 41 games.   • Discovery Canyon girls swimming defeated Cheyenne Mountain in Wednesday's dual meet at Pine Creek High School, led by Alaia Sloan's strong finishes; the Thunder won seven of 12 events + boosted team spirit.
